First section, on the background of the World War I, really lived by the author :

• "Les forêts, on a tiré dessus aussi, au canon. Elles n’ont pas existé huit jours les forêts. Ça fait encore des beaux feux les forêts, mais ça dure à peine."

Le foreste anche, gli han tirato sopra, coi cannoni. Non han durato otto giorni le foreste. Fanno ancora bei fuochi le foreste, ma sta per finire. (p.38)

Forests, they fired cannons also on forests. They have endured eight days, forests. There are still nice fires from the forests, but will not last for long.

• "Il nous aurait envoyés prendre du feu à la bouche des canons d’en face."

Ci avrebbe mandato a prendere il fuoco alla bocca dei cannoni di fronte. (p.42)

He would have sent us to take fire from the mouth of opponents' guns.

• "Les nuits de Billancourt étaient douces, animées parfois par ces puériles alarmes d’avions et de zeppelins, grâce auxquelles les citadins trouvaient moyen d’éprouver des frissons justificatifs."

Le notti di Billancourt erano dolci, animate talvolta da quei puerili allarmi aerei e di zeppelin, grazie ai quali i cittadini trovavano il modo di provare brividi giustificabili. (p. 92)

Billancourt nights were sweet, sometimes animated by those puerile raid warnings for airplanes and zeppelins, thanks to which citizens found a way to prove justifiable chills.

• "Mais pour un oui, pour un non, à présent, des étourdissements me prenaient, à en passer sous les voitures. Je titubais dans la guerre."

Ma per un nonnulla adesso, mi prendevano delle vertigini, da finire sotto le vetture. Non sapevo dove sbattere nella guerra. (p.117)

But for nothing now, dizziness struck me, much to fall under cars. I staggered into the war.

• "Si j'avais six francs je monterais avec la petite brune que tu vois làbas, près de la machine à sous…"

Se avessi sei franchi salirei con quella brunetta che vedi là, vicino alla macchinetta mangiasoldi... (p.125)

If I had six francs I would go up with the brunette you see over there, by the slot machine ...
